Russia: The press service of the Bryansk Machine-Building Plant (BMZ) told ROLLINGSTOCK that ten TEM23 shunting locomotives will be marketed by the end of this year. In August, the third model of TEM23 locomotives was presented to the governor of the Bryansk region, Aleksandr Bogomaz, during his visit to the plant.

The four-axle two-diesel locomotive TEM23 was developed in the early 2020s as an alternative to the TEM18DM, with the certification followed in 2022. Prototypes were tested by industrial companies and Russian Railways in 2023, but amidst the challenging geopolitical situation, additional import substitution measures were required to enter production.

According to BMZ, the new TEM23 diesel locomotive is equipped with KAMAZ engines with Russian fuel equipment and electronic control unit. Circuit breakers and cable products have also been replaced, and the power of the traction generator has increased from 315 to 400 kW. “The new locomotive uses domestic components that are 100% Russian-made”, the plant’s press service said.

Earlier, the first TEM23 was handed over for operation at the TMH plant in Mytishchi. The certification of 2022, obtained by BMZ, covers a pre-series of 100 shunting diesel locomotives.
