Germany: Last week, the electric freight locomotives were shipped at the Port of Hamburg. The batch is expected to arrive in Alexandria by late February.

The 4.8 MW four-axle Bo-Bo locomotives can operate at up to 120 km/h and haul trainsets of 1,200 tonnes. Designed for 25 kV AC lines, the vehicles are adjusted to withstand high temperatures, dust and sand.

Before shipment, 14 electric locomotives for Egypt were tested at the Wegberg-Wildenrath test and validation centre in Germany. This is the first time when the original Vectrons are supplied beyond the EU countries. Previously, export locomotives were considerably modified by Siemens for external markets, as for the USA and India, receiving a new model name.

The rolling stock is delivered for the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) according to a 2022 major contract for 41 Vectron electric locomotives, 94 Desiro HC trains and 41 high-speed Velaros. The agreement, which has become the German manufacturer’s largest-ever order, also covers 15 years of maintenance service and supplies of signalling systems. It is worth noting that Siemens Mobility’s multiple units have already been undergoing tests in Egypt since 2025.
