Russia: In February, several news was aired on the forthcoming purchase of locomotives, coaches and cars.

The latest news concerns rolling stock for commuter services. The company plans to launch 288 new units, including 106 cars for 18 EP3D trains, a total of 100 cars for 17 ES104 and ES105 EMUS, the Finist, six cars for the EP2DM train, six coaches for the DP2D push-pull diesel train, and 10 coaches. Compared to 2024, the order is 27% lower.

For long-distance services, Russian Railways says it will buy about 400 new passenger coaches, although no information is given about the models. Orders in this segment also fell by around 27%.

As for locomotives, the company will buy 400 new units, of which 260 will be electric and 140 diesel vehicles, and again without specifying the models or whether they will be freight, passenger or shunting units. “More than 40% of the new locomotives will be used in the north-west of the country and more than 30% in the east”, RZD said, planning to buy 29% fewer locomotives.

The current reduction in purchases is due to a cutback in the investment programme in response to the high key interest rate and debt burden. At the same time, work is carried out to provide the company with a RUB 15 bln ($170 mln) grant from the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade to increase purchases of locomotives and MU cars.
