Poland: The manufacturer has secured a PLN 31.9 mln (€7.5 mln) contract with the national operator PKP Intercity to overhaul eight traction systems. The overhaul includes engine installation and its subsequent testing, with completion scheduled within 2.5 years and no more than 140 days per locomotive.

The 16V 4000 R84 engines, manufactured by Germany’s MTU, part of Rolls-Royce, were originally fitted to PESA’s own SU160 series Gama diesel locomotives. Of the ten units built in 2015, Pesa overhauled already two engines last year.

The SU160 fleet has demonstrated above-average failure rates since entering service. Pesa claims over 80% of breakdowns due to design flaws in the MTU engines, while the German manufacturer attributes reliability issues to traction systems maintenance being performed at unauthorised depots.
