New South Korean train makes debut in Tanzania

Tanzania: The trainset has made its inaugural test run from Dar es Salaam to the capital city of Dodoma with a group of local leaders headed by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on board.

The train consists of an electric locomotive by Hyundai Rotem and passenger coaches by Sung Shin RST, and will run on the new railway line of 440 km which is to enter service in July.

Under the contract of 2021 with Hyundai Rotem, Tanzania Railways Corporation has so far received nine of 19 electric locomotives and one of ten eight-car EMUs to provide service on this route. The trains with a capacity of 590 passengers can operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The rolling stock is produced at the manufacturer’s plant in Changwon, South Korea. Besides, 65 out of 89 first- and second-class coaches, including a special coach for the President of the country, have been delivered to the Tanzanian operator under the contract with Sung Shin RST.
