Kazakhstan: The country’s Prime Minister, Olzhas Bektenov, was told data on diesel locomotive production during his visit to the US-owned plant Lokomotiv Kurastyru Zauyty, LKZ, in Astana.
Over in 15 years, 611 locomotives have been assembled at the Kazakh plant since the launch of production in 2009. The total investment into the project is reported to account for KZT 30 bln ($57.9 mln).
According to LKZ’s President, Marat Tleubaev, the plant has mastered all key parts and the level of localisation today reaches 75%. Currently, the plant produces 120 mainline diesel locomotives per year, but the number of TEM11A shunting locomotives wasn’t disclosed.
In October, LKZ was ordered more than 70 TE33A diesel locomotives for Kazakhstan Temir Zholy. Earlier, the operator had received 451 such units. In addition, another project, aimed at introducing Wabtec gas-powered locomotives, is under development.
