South Africa: This is what Kannan Ponnusamy, Head of Business Development at SMH Rail, told in his interview with Railways Africa.

The facility is being set up in collaboration with SMH’s distributor in Africa, Leruo Rail Africa. It will be launched up and running within two months, following current upgrading activities to specialise in the repair of diesel locomotives and freight cars and the maintenance of wheel sets and bearings.

SMH Rail’s operations in Africa include the overhaul and maintenance of diesel locomotives, including those that have been taken out of service. By now, more than 35 locomotives have been repaired for Tanzania, ten for Zambia and three for Kenya. Back in 2021, the company delivered three H10 1000 mm gauge diesel locomotives to Tanzania Railways.

In August, SMH Rail signed a partnership agreement with India’s BEML to strengthen its market position in South East Asia and Africa.
