Russia: The models are accessible through the distance learning system of the railway service company’s corporate university. The 3D portfolio includes virtual units of five electric locomotives and seven diesel locomotives operated by RZD.

The e-learning platform provides models of traction engines and motors, as well as mechanical, electrical, automatic train stop and pneumatic equipment of each locomotive. It is possible to view a component from different perspectives, assemble and disassemble it, and study the element descriptions and maintenance procedures online. There is also an augmented reality option which enables a user to place this or that component into the real-world environment via a mobile phone.

The project aims to help specialists of service depots in rolling stock maintenance and also students of railway colleges and universities in learning the necessary material. “We hope that these 3D models will be largely used at manufacturing facilities, including for on-site technical classes,” noted Andrey Gubanov, who is in charge of the LocoTech Corporate University.

The company has also created QR codes to be placed on full-scale mock-ups of the vehicles at LocoTech-Service’s locomotive depots so that a worker could scan a code and see a certain 3D model and animated maintenance procedures.

The whole 3D portfolio will be open to everyone interested till the end of February. Further, only the authorised users with personal accounts in the corporate university distance learning system will have access.
