New contracts and deals in the global rolling stock market.

Germany — Alstom has inked a contract to supply up to 90 trains for the S-Bahn in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, which includes Cologne and Düsseldorf. The contract was awarded to the French manufacturer following the tender announced by the local operators go.Rheinland and VRR in July 2024. The project, with an undisclosed number of trains in its firm part, is financed by European and German banks. The first Adessia Streams are scheduled to start operation in 2029.

USA — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, MBTA, has placed an order with Hyundai Rotem for an additional 39 double-deck coaches, worth $165 mln. The coaches will be supplied as an option to the contract signed in 2019. Initially, 80 coaches have been ordered, with several options for 124 coaches exercised on a later date. The purchase value is $470 mln.

Switzerland — Stalder will deliver 20 three-car EMUs for the Solothurn–Bern RegioExpress route RE5 under a contract worth CHF 190 mln was signed with the regional network operator RBS. Up to three partially low-floor metre-gauge trains are expected to operate in multiple. The first three trains will enter service in 2027–2028, with the remainder between 2029 and 2021. The new trains will replace the Be 4/12 Secondas built by SWA and ABB in the early 1990s.

USA — Progress Rail has completed the refurbishment of 15 diesel locomotives for Chicago’s Metra commuter rail system under a 2019 contract worth $10.9 mln. To convert the SD70-MACH freight locomotives built by EMD between 1993 and 2004 into passenger ones, the US company installed new Tier 3 engines among other things. This year, Metra has placed an order for another nine diesel locomotives as part an option for 27 vehicles.

Czechia — CZ Loko will supply three EffiShunter 1000 shunting locomotives to the local developer GJW Praha. These four-axle locomotives are already supplied to Sweden.
