Recent deals, tenders and deliveries in the locomotive markets.
EU — Stadler will supply leasing company Nexrail with up to 200 EURO9000 freight locomotives equipped with last-mile capability. The companies have signed a framework agreement, although neither the size of the firm order nor its total value has been disclosed. The six-axle multi-system locomotives will feature lithium-titanate batteries with a capacity of 636 kWh, enabling autonomous operation of up to 1,200 kW. The batteries will also store regenerated braking energy and help reduce the load on the overhead line.

USA — The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has approved a $386 mln plan to purchase an additional 45 Wabtec R255 diesel-battery hybrid locomotives. The order will be placed under an option to the existing contract awarded in 2020 for 25 similar units.
Kazakhstan — Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) will raise $1.6 bln through a 10-year loan from Citibank of US, guaranteed by the US Export-Import Bank, to finance procurement of Wabtec locomotives. KTZ previously signed several agreements with Wabtec worth a total of $4.2 bln for the supply and servicing of 300 locomotives, as well as maintenance and overhauls of earlier models.
Switzerland — Freight operator SBB Cargo plans to acquire up to 55 battery-equipped electric shunting locomotives. Contract award is expected in autumn 2026, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2032. The new locomotives will fully replace the fleet of Vossloh G1700 BB (Am 843) diesel locomotives built between 2003 and 2009. SBB Cargo has already ordered 35 mainline multi-system locomotives of Stadler’s new Euro DuFour platform.

Gabon — Windhoff’s cable-battery electric shunting unit has entered service at Comilog’s manganese mine in Moanda. The equipment comprises five TeleTrac RW100AEM traction modules and a cable reel platform used for recharging the batteries. The unit is reportedly capable of hauling trains of up to 13,000 t at 0.5 km/h, delivering a tractive effort of 565 kN with a battery capacity of 620 kWh.

Uruguay — Wabtec has delivered three C23EMP mainline diesel locomotives to the country. The units were built at the firm’s plant in Contagem, Brazil, under a contract signed with logistics operator Grupo RAS.

Russia — Kuchuksulphate has purchased a TGM40 diesel locomotive from Kambarka Engineering Works. The 294 kW shunting unit, valued at RUB 55 mln ($0.7 mln), has been delivered and is undergoing trials. Over the past decade, the Kambarka plant has supplied Kuchuksulphate with several TU7A narrow-gauge diesel locomotives.
