Egypt — National operator ENR has contracted Canadian firm Advanced Power Dynamics a $296 mln contract to overhaul, modernise and service 180 mainline diesel locomotives. The scope includes AA22T and DE2550 models, built under EMD (now Progress Rail) licence in Germany during the 1970s–1990s. IRJ reports the programme will cover 55 operational and 125 stored units. Notably, these locomotives are slated for heavy overhaul not for the first time — ENR signed similar deals in 2021 and 2023 with Ukraine’s Mykolaiv Locomotive Repair Plant and Czech Škoda Group, though no implementation details emerged. Separately, Progress Rail secured a contract in April 2025 to upgrade 100 Egyptian units of the same model.
