India: National operator Indian Railways’ export arm RITES has shipped the locomotive from Banaras Locomotive Works, BLW, in Varanasi to Mozambique. The technical specifications of the vehicle remain undisclosed.
The delivery forms part of a $37.7 mln November 2023 contract with Mozambique’s Ports and Railways for ten locomotives, financed by the African Development Bank. RITES secured the contract by offering the most competitive pricing. This order follows China’s CRRC delivery of three diesel locomotives to Mozambique, which entered service in late May.
Another major $277 mln export contract for diesel locomotives to Guinea, signed in July 2024, is being executed by Indian Railways-Wabtec JV. The Marhowra plant will supply 150 ES43ACmi diesel locomotives, with the first 37 units scheduled for delivery by March 2026 and the remain vehicles by March 2028.
