China: A six-axle 3,000 kW shunter is now in service at a marshalling yard of the Port of Lianyungang. Lithium iron phosphate batteries with 3,360 kWh capacity provide traction, offering a 100 km range.
The standout feature of the shunting locomotive is quick-swap battery packs, which boost operational flexibility and allow off-peak charging when power costs are lower. On-board fast charging is also provided.
An intelligent monitoring and predictive diagnostics system forecasts faults, with real-time data on locomotive and battery status sent to a service centre.
Built at CRRC’s Datong plant for state-owned Lianyungang Port Holding Group, the project kicked off in 2025 with joint parameter development. Compared to conventional diesel shunters, it is reported to cut energy costs by 84% and maintenance by 65%, with lifetime savings of around CNY 60 mln ($8.7 mln) and annual CO₂ emissions down 600 tonnes.
Note that CRRC unveiled its Fuxing family of shunting locomotives in 2024, covering only-battery and hybrid vehicles. In 2023 it delivered a 1,500 kW battery shunter to Lianyuan Iron & Steel.
