Canada: The freight operator plans to carry out operational testing of the Q19-2.4GH vehicle in the first half-year of 2025. The testing will take place first in the US South and then in the low temperatures of the Canadian West.

With this project in mind, Knoxville Locomotive Works overhauled the EMD SW1200 diesel locomotive, produced in 1956 by Electro-Motive Diesel and refurbished in 1985. The locomotive got a new hybrid 2.4 MW traction system with an engine and an auxiliary battery. This reportedly led to the engine’s power rise by 60%. At the same time, the battery provided 50% less fuel consumption in the updated vehicle compared to other Canadian National, CN, shunters.

For several years CN has been cooperating with Knoxville Locomotive Works, which overhauls its diesel locomotives, increasing their emission standard.
