USA: The operator Cando Rail & Terminals has completed the retrofit of the four-axle SW1200 locomotive, produced by American EMD in 1955. The vehicle’s key feature is its operability at temperatures of -40 °C.

The shunter has been equipped with nickel manganese cobalt batteries, but the range is not yet known. The cost of the project is estimated at CAD 4 mln (USD 2.9 mln), including the contribution from the Government of Alberta amounting to CAD 2 mln (USD 1.4 mln).

The first stage of testing held in Winnipeg was finished in early 2025. According to Brian Cornick, Cando’s President and CEO, the locomotive was able to haul 50 cars, withstanding a temperature colder than -40 °C. The vehicle is reported to enter commercial service in 2026.

Currently, Cando Rail & Terminals has a fleet of 110 diesel locomotives. In due course, they could be retrofitted in a similar vein. There are plans to build a dedicated facility for this purpose.
