India: The plants, owned by the national operator Indian Railways, built 1,681 locomotive between April 2024 and March 2025. According to IR, this is the highest ever national production, representing a 14% increase on the previous financial year, when 1,472 locomotives were built.
As the country moves towards meeting its national electricity targets, the majority of vehicles, 1,581, are electric locomotives of the WAP-5, WAP-7, WAG-9, WAG-12B and NRC series. The rest are WDG 4G/6G diesel locomotives.
The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is the largest facility. In the last financial year, it produced 700 electric locomotives, a record for the company and an increase of 17% over the previous financial year. The site of Banaras Locomotive Works in Varanasi built 477 electric locomotives and the site of the Patiala Locomotive Works in Patiala built 304 units.
Joint ventures between IR and Alstom in Madhepura and between IR and Wabtec in Marhaura each assembled 100 locomotives. This year, production is set to grow in Dahod, where Siemens Mobility will release 1,200 electric locomotives by 2034.
