UK: The American manufacturer’s European division has announced that the eight-axle vehicle of two short-coupled flatcars is undergoing a comprehensive test programme, including running tests. The wagon’s design meets the restrictions and requirements of the British railway infrastructure.
The 27.8 m twin flatcar is intended for the transportation of two 40-foot or four 20-foot containers. It features a total payload of 127 t, or 63.5 t per each container flatcar. The design of the wagon is reported to provide a lower cost of ownership, with extended overhaul intervals. The manufacturer also states that the wagon purchase price is 30% reduced in comparison with other flatcars of the same length approved in the UK.
The running gear features a 20.5 tf Y-family bogie fitted with hydraulic dampers. That allows for compliance with the GMRT2141 standards of derailment resistance and resistance to roll-over. The wagon construction also boasts new wheels with better wear allowance, ensuring an increase in wear and tear.
In addition, Greenbrier Europe emphasises the new vehicle’s flexibility, noting that it can be likewise used for track construction and maintenance, including the transportation of bulk materials, rails and pipes.
