UK: The manufacturer of lifting and transporting equipment, including rail cranes, have acquired assets of the locomotive builder.

Last year insolvency practitioners were employed at Clayton Equipment, with all of its 34 employees having been fired previously.

In an official statement, the new owner announced the company will be rebranded as Clayton Locomotives and will continue to manufacture shunting locomotives at its existing production facility in Burton upon Trent.

The Clayton portfolio encompasses a range of shunter locomotives with multiple traction options, including battery-electric, Stage V-compliant diesel, and hybrid configurations that combine both variants. Models are also available for third-rail or overhead line electrification. The locomotives offer a power range of 97 to 566 kW, tractive effort from 29 to 331 kN, and weights between 12 and 135 t.

Established in 1931, Clayton Equipment entered the shunter market in 1946. Throughout its history, the company produced over 3,500 vehicles, exporting to more than 60 countries. According to its last published accounts for the 2023–2024 financial year, Clayton Equipment recorded a loss of just over £1 mln (approximately €1.2 mln).
