Russia: The batch size was clarified in response to a ROLLINGSTOCK query to Transneft, which encompasses the manufacturer, Russian Electric Motors (RED) in Chelyabinsk.

Acceptance testing of three samples of the asynchronous traction motors TAD650 took place in December. Based on the results, the design documentation was approved for installation series production. “Production of the TAD650 installation series is scheduled to begin in February 2026”, states an official Transneft message. Certification to conform with TR CU 002/2011 is expected in early spring.

The first TAD650 sample was demonstrated at the beginning of 2025 at Ural Locomotives, part of Sinara – Transport Machines, STM, which is now setting up high-speed train production. The motor specifications include rated power of 650 kW, rated shaft rotation frequency of 5,900 rpm, efficiency of at least 95%, and weight of 750 kg. During testing, the TAD650 samples underwent additional reliability trials. “The motor design confirmed values exceeding the norms, ensuring failure-free operation”, notes Transneft.

The installation batch will equip 25 of the first Russian high-speed trains EVS360 being built. Meanwhile, RZD-Partner quotes Dmitry Tumanov, CEO of Ural Dynamic Machines, which manages RED, stating that a three-year contract for 688 TAD650 motors has already been signed to complete all 43 trains confirmed to date. According to the approved schedule, the first train sample with an operational top speed of 360 km/h should be ready for certification trials in summer 2027. The EVS360 trains are due to enter service on the currently under-construction Moscow–St Petersburg HSR in early April 2028.

The TAD650 continues RED’s line of asynchronous motors for railway rolling stock. The plant mainly collaborates with STM, supplying equipment for its new rolling stock line. Previously certified motors include TAD330 for Finist electric trains, ATD1000 for 2ES8 and 3ES8 Malakhit electric locomotives, and TAD430 for 2TE35A diesel locomotives.
