Russian Electric Motors (RED), a subsidiary of Transneft, the world’s largest pipeline company, has been granted the TR EAEU 001/2011 certificate.

The certificate permits the serial production of A450-1000/2.1-6-2-UKhL1 asynchronous traction motors over a five-year period. The motors will be produced at RED’s plant in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

The 1,000 kW three-phase induction motor is claimed to have an energy conversion efficiency of 89%. The frameless motor designed for use with a double gear has a 15% longer service interval compared to DC motors. As RED informed ROLLINGSTOCK, the majority of motor components are sourced domestically.

RED has announced that production of ATD1000 motors began in 2023 under a certificate issued to Sinara Group’s subsidiary and RED’s customer, Tyagovye Komponenty. Both certificates are issued for the same design documentation elaborated by RED. The motors were developed and underwent tests and trials within two years.

The motors have been designed for a new generation of electric freight locomotives from Ural Locomotives, part of Sinara–Transport Machines. At the beginning of this year, Russian Railways put in operation the first 3ES8 electric locomotive delivered in 2023. This year, the national operator anticipates delivery of an additional four vehicles. In March, RED announced its plans to produce 64 ATD1000 motors this year, which would be sufficient for 16 sections of electric locomotives.

In 2020, RED began a collaboration with Sinara Group to produce a comprehensive range of traction motors for rolling stock. At the end of 2023, the TAD430 asynchronous motor for the 2TE35A mainline diesel locomotive was accepted. The motor builder is currently developing the TAD330, which will replace German traction motors in Lastochka EMUs operated by Russian Railways.

RED is currently engaged in the development of a project of the utmost importance: the TAD650 motor for the Russian high-speed train. By March, the 3D model of the motor was developed and electromagnetic, thermal and ventilation calculations were completed. The prototype is scheduled for construction in 2025.
