Germany: The train modernisation was carried out at Alstom’s Hennigsdorf plant. There, a class 430 unit was equipped with obstacle detection systems from German company Bosch, along with sensors, video cameras, and antennas. The unit was originally produced by Bombardier Transportation, acquired by Alstom in 2021.

The upgrade formed part of the large-scale AutomatedTrain project, launched in 2023 by national operator Deutsche Bahn. The project aims to achieve full automation of train preparation and shunting between sidings and passenger platforms without driver involvement. The target is the highest grade of automation, GoA4.

Unmanned operation is enabled through the train’s ETCS movement control system overlaid with ATO automatic train operation and onboard obstacle detection equipment. The AutomatedTrain trials also involve a Siemens Mobility Mireo electric multiple unit upgraded for driverless operation, with results scheduled for presentation at InnoTrans 2026.
