Russia: TEEMP supercapacitors as part of the automatic start-stop system (ASDL) are annually installed on 200 diesel locomotives of the national railway company.
Supercapacitors are produced by TEEMP (part of the Rotec company) and are used in ASDL developed and implemented by AVP Technology. This system is installed on new serial TEM18DM diesel locomotives manufactured by the Bryansk Machine-Building Plant (part of TMH), as well as part of modernization of ChME3, TEM18, 2TE10M, 2M62, TGM6 locomotives and other models of the Russian Railways (RZD) fleet. Rotec states that 1.5 thsd locomotives in RZD are already equipped with ASDL.
According to Rotec, the supercapacitors implementation already has shown its relevance against the backdrop of current economic conditions. Earlier, TEEMP estimated that ASDL allows one diesel locomotive to save up to 300 thsd RUR during the year on fuel and lubricants and payment for emissions. Thus, the savings of RZD due to the operation of the specified fleet with ASDL can reach 0.5 bln RUR per year ($4.8 mln USD).

The production of supercapacitors was launched by Rotec in the Moscow Region in 2017 and currently allows to produce up to 200,000 supercapacitor cells (16,000 three-terminal modules) annually. The company notes that production is localised at the highest possible level and only part of the primary raw materials is imported.
Rotec sees further scaling in supercapacitors delivery for the assembly of new trams. In particular, the company has already carried out trials with the installation of a supercapacitor on a tram in St. Petersburg.
