Earlier in July 2023, Alstom’s proposal to localise manufacturing of rolling stock and components was approved by the Cabinet of Egypt.
The production sites are to be established near Alexandria. One plant will produce trams, metro trains, monorail cars, and other rolling stock types. The other facility will manufacture signalling systems and components. The sites are expected to create 1,200 new local jobs.
A number of large projects are implemented by Alstom in Egypt. In 2022, the French manufacturer was awarded a framework agreement to design, build and maintain Cairo Metro Line 6, as well as to deliver 294 Metropolis cars for this first driverless metro in Africa. Alstom is also supplying 55 trainsets for Cairo Metro Line 1, and is constructing the monorail system with 70 Innovia 300 trains produced at its Derby plant, UK.
